The core courses will build your foundational knowledge of the language and emphasis will be placed on conversational skills. Students will work with an experienced language instructor, as a learning partner, from the course inception through the capstone. Upon completion of all coursework, students will complete a capstone course to prepare them for the oral proficiency exam. The proficiency exam is based on criteria set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), which is the only national organization dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction. Credit for previous courses may apply. Placement tests for students with some language experience will be available.

Students will be using the Descubre program which is aprogram that introduces Spanish by using communicative goals stressing good teaching practices and focuses on universal access that serves the learner with frequent practice and repetition, multi-sensory input and output, also offering options for advanced and fast learners. It also concentrates on the classroom environment and the development of strategies for creating a communicative learning community and maintaining the target language as a plus. Descubre encourages students to apply the reading strategies they learn in and out of the classroom.
Students will utilize tools that emphasize vocabulary and grammar, allowing students to interact in a varied and meaningful way in the target language.
Students will be immersed into the language and culture by using the four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
Students will achieve direct and communicative oral practice.
Students will understand readers and will be able and will be able to ask and give information about them.
Students will prepare to take the ACTFL in Spanish Oral Proficiency post capstone test review course.
